Daybreak Foods, Inc.’s leadership has transformed the business into the country’s fourth-largest egg producer since its inception in 1967, now home to more than 17 million laying hens across their farms in Wisconsin, Minnesota, Iowa, Illinois, Ohio, and Michigan. At the company’s beginning, founder Robert Rehm had not yet acquired any farmland and was focused solely on the sales and installation of poultry equipment. Today, Daybreak Foods produces and processes both shell and liquid eggs in its position as one of the largest suppliers to the food processing and restaurant industries.
One recent example of Daybreak’s growth is its acquisition of Konos, Inc. (previously Vande Bunte Eggs) in August of 2022. Based in Martin, Michigan, Konos was a family-owned and operated production and processing company. With 2.7 million laying hens among their locations in Michigan and Illinois, Daybreak’s acquisition increased their total hen count from more than 15 million to more than 17 million hens and presents low-cost cage-free conversion opportunity that will support continued growth.
In efforts to expand Daybreak’s cage-free egg production capabilities, major construction has taken place in Northwest Iowa at Daybreak’s Graettinger location. Where eight conventional hen houses once were, three brand new cage-free buildings now stand. Each of these new buildings holds two separate sides of cage-free flocks, each side housing about 201,000 hens. This transition is an ongoing development for Daybreak, as two of the three buildings are currently in use, and the third building is expected to be finished by July.
